This Trailer Proves ‘The Fresh Prince’ Makes A Damn Good Dramatic Movie

What would happen if Will Smith made The Fresh Prince today? Bel-Air, a story of a kid from Philly whose life got turned upside-down… in 2019.

A fan-made film.

FIELD NOTES FROM THE FUNNY OR DIE STAFF

In the current timeline who knows what can happen when you wake up in the morning. Is Donald Trump President of the United States? Check. Can you get dick emoji candy to send a tasteless, tasty insult via US Mail? Check. And did Tommy Wiseau, a filmmaker whose movie The Room turned out so badly it became a cult hit that ironically then found huge success which led to a feature “film within a film” film starring James Franco, recently announce another movie, this time called “Big Shark” and provide a bat-shit trailer for it? ALSO CHECK, YOU FINE PEOPLE — IT’S 2019 AND WE DON’T KNOW WHAT THE HELL’S GOING ON.

Thus, it comes as a surprise-not-surprise that someone has reimagined The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as a dramatic, edgy, coming of age, fish out of water movie called Bel-Air

AND IT LOOKS LEGITIMATELY LIKE A DAMN GOOD MOVIE

AND IT’S BASED ALMOST ENTIRELY ON THE OPENING OF THE 90S SITCOM

Like, I would go see it.

Here’s the original, for context.

Damn. Takes you back.

In hindsight, like so many great ideas, it does seem obvious that this was here the whole time. So many of our (meaning, you know, humanity’s) stories totally change depending on the way they’re told. Fairy tales are completely dark and messed up and rely a huge amount on torturing children. Cartoons are INSANELY VIOLENT. So, sure, take a glossed-over, ‘90s, broadcast TV picture of life in the inner city followed by a move to the other side, reshoot it with intense close-ups, fantastic cinematography, great shot design, believable and grounded and intense performances from actors who have great lines of dialogue and chance to just be in the scene, plus a montage or two, and what do you get?

GOLD, IS WHAT.

This fantastic throwback remix comes to you via Morgan Cooper.
