People Are Mad That Pumbaa, A Warthog, Looks Like A Warthog

The hype surrounding Disney’s live action (why are we calling it live action when it’s still animation) reboot of The Lion King has not died down since it was first announced years ago, and it feels like we’ve been waiting for roughly half a century for its release. IT’S ALMOST HERE THOUGH. FINALLY. AT LONG LAST. The movie hits theaters July 19, and in anticipation of its premiere, Disney just released a series of character posters that get right up close and personal.

Everyone is beyond stoked.

For the most part.

If there’s one thing that we’ve learned from Disney’s recent batch of live action remakes, it’s that you really can’t please everybody. When the first look at Will Smith as Genie was released, people cried out, “BUT HE’S NOT BLUE,” and when we got a glimpse of Genie in his blue form people cried out, “THIS IS SOMEHOW WORSE.”

Everybody’s a critic.

So it’s no surprise that some people were not thrilled about one character’s new look in particular: Pumbaa the warthog.

Obviously… He doesn’t look quite as we all remember.

So, okay. I get that in everyone’s mind Pumbaa is an adorable red cartoon animal with a big goofy smile and comically thin legs, but here’s the thing.

THIS IS WHAT WARTHOGS LOOK LIKE.

And has everyone forgotten that Pumbaa’s whole backstory is that all the other animals were afraid of him because of his appearance but he’s actually this big softie who just wants friends?? HE HAS A WHOLE MUSICAL NUMBER ABOUT IT.
