The First Trailer for Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson’s New Comedy is Here and it Looks AMAZING

Back in October 2016 we first heard about an upcoming project between Mindy Kaling, The Mindy Project star and showrunner, and dramedy demigod Emma Thompson. After the initial rumors started things went quiet for a good while, but I’m excited to announce that the first trailer for Late Night was dropped today, and it looks SO GOOD.

Slated for release on June 7, the story follows a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed writer (Kaling) starting her new job writing for a late night powerhouse (Thompson), who is very clearly cutthroat as she fires three people within the first 15 seconds of the trailer. It’s quickly revealed that the network is planning on pushing Thompson’s character out of her position as a late night talk show host for a newer, younger model. So, the bubbly happy-go-lucky Kaling teams up with her in order to make her more lovable and bring her into this era, because, “they can’t replace you, if everyone loves you.”

It was originally described as Broad City meets The Devil Wears Prada, which I learned after I had watched the trailer and said out loud, “holy shit this is like Broad City meets The Devil Wears Prada,” so suffice it to say, it’s an apt description.

Kaling and Thompson are backed by an impressive cast of comedy veterans like Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project), Paul Walter Hauser (Super Troopers 2), and John Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun). From the looks of it this film is going to tackle everything from ageism and race to being a woman in a male dominated industry, and if it’s half as funny as the trailer is, there’s a lot to look forward to.
