Under A Rock with Tig Notaro: Richard Jefferson
Not all celebrities are alike, and there are those who are larger than life. Stars like Richard Jefferson, who, at 6’7”, literally towers above the rest. The NBA small forward’s esteemed career began in Arizona, where he played college ball for UA’s Wildcats. During his time there he was an all-Midwest Regional and all-Final Four selection, and he helped lead his team to the national championship game in 2001. Immediately after graduating that same year, Jefferson was a first round draft pick for the New Jersey (now the Brooklyn) Nets, and in his first season was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. Although he was taken on as a substitute, by the 2004 season he signed a six-year contract as a starter due to his incredible skill and versatility. He suffered a ruptured ligament during that season, but that didn’t stop him from becoming one of the NBA’s best athletes, and by 2007 he became the Net’s second all-time leading scorer. After seven seasons with the Nets, Jefferson signed with a number of different teams and eventually joined the Cleveland Cavaliers. In the 2016 NBA Finals, Jefferson turned the tides against the Golden State Warriors and led his team to victory — making the Cavaliers the only team in history to win the championship after being down 3-1 in the series. In addition to his success in the NBA, Jefferson was a member of the USA Men’s Olympic basketball team in the 2004 Summer Olympics, and in 2012 he was inducted into the Pac-12 Basketball Hall of Honor. He also donated $3.7 million to the UA’s basketball and volleyball facility — the largest donation from any of the school’s former players. Although he retired from the NBA in 2018, he’s still active in the world of sport — you can catch him on the YES Network as the Nets’ game and studio analyst, and on FS1, ESPN, and the Pac-12 Network as a basketball analyst.
But just because Richard Jefferson’s career includes breaking numerous records, receiving various honors, winning the NBA championship, philanthropy, becoming a friggin’ Olympic athlete, and being a nationally broadcasted sports analyst, we all know by now that doesn’t mean Tig has a clue who he is. It’s gonna take some hints, help from Alexa, and even an improv scene if she’s going to figure out who Richard Jefferson is, because, well, she just lives under a rock.
