A Rotund Rat Had To Be Rescued From A Manhole And It’s Deeply Relatable

February is coming to a close which marks roughly the halfway point of winter, and this is probably the most fitting – well, actually pretty ill fitting – story to mark this time of year.

In the town of Bensheim, Germany, emergency services were called for a very important rescue as a rat found herself stuck inside a manhole. Which, honestly, is a story I relate to way more than I’d like.

The rat, animal rescuer Michael Sehr said, had “a lot of winter flab and was stuck fast at her hip,” and ok, same.

The rescue efforts were fairly sizeable which lead a lot of people to ask the question, “was it worth it?” To which Sehr told the media, “even animals that are hated by many deserve respect,” and once again, I feel seen.

It took THREE FIREFIGHTERS to get this chunky girl out of the sewer grate, but the important thing is she made it out – and the pictures are adorable.

Shout out to the Rhein Neckar animal rescue for getting this plump little lady out of the sewer and placing her directly into my heart.
